Groups (beta)

Groups are a way for multiple users to post to a single site about a common interest and are now available as a beta release. You can create, join, and and repost to a group.

The person who creates the group will be able to manage it like a normal site via the dropdown menu in the top right. Anyone who joins (follows) a group can post to it via the normal repost/reblog button (you will be able to create original posts in the near future). We've created a cats group to kick things off since everyone loves cats.

Todo:

  • Post directly to a group via the create post page Done!
  • Invite-only groups

Update: You can now post directly to any site in your account and groups you follow from the create post page -- use the "Target site" dropdown to select the site or group to post to.

Create Multiple Sites under 1 Account!

Loforo now supports multiple sites/blogs under 1 login! You no longer need to log in and out of your account to switch sites.

To create a new site under your existing account, go to the dropdown menu in the top right and click the "New Site" link. That's it! There's no step 2.

To switch between accounts, use the dropdown at the top of the menu in the top right.

If you already have multiple sites at Loforo, send us an email and we'll be happy to merge the sites into 1 account -- be sure to include the list of sites you want merged (the Loforo domain names) and the email login you want them added to.

There is currently a limit of 3 sites per account.

Coming soon: Groups(!)

Beta: Post to Loforo Bookmarklet

We have a beta/prototype "Post to Loforo" bookmarklet. If you'd like to test it, drag-and-drop the link below into your browser's bookmark toolbar (see the bottom of this post to learn how to add it on iPhone/Android browsers like Chrome and Safari):

Post to Loforo

Demo:

After you've added the bookmarklet to your toolbar, click it while on a page that has content you want to post to Loforo and we'll try to do the magic to get the right image/video/embed code added to the Create post form. Again, this is considered "beta" and offers limited functionality (for example, it will only pick 1 image/video from the page instead of letting you pick 1 or more images). It also has custom support for a number of sites like Youtube, giphy, gfycat, Thumbsnap, etc) -- for sites it doesn't recognize, it will fallback to posting a plain link to the page you're on.

Install bookmarklet in Android phones or tablets (Chrome Mobile)

We assume you're reading this page on your Android phone, with Google Chrome. The first thing you do is to make a bookmark. Then, go to the URL-field of your new bookmark, paste the javascript of our bookmarklet, and save it. Now you've made a bookmarklet.

Instructions:

  1. Make a bookmark of this page (Tap menu icon, click the Add bookmark icon). More information Read More »

Now fetching external images/videos

Loforo will now fetch and mirror any external images (jpg, gif, webp, png) and videos (mp4 and webm) that are in posts to our server shortly after posting (so if that external service goes down or deletes the image/video, it'll always be available on Loforo).

We've also added full .webp support (both static and animated webp images) to the image uploader (via our other service, Thumbsnap).

All existing posts with external content are being processed from newest to oldest at around 2000 posts per hour and we expect to be done with the full backlog in a few days.

For those more technically inclined: this mirroring only works with img and video tags at the moment and not any iframe content so if you are linking posts from something like giphy, try to add the direct link to the gif/mp4/"gifv" and we'll be able to download it.

Repost / Like Lists

Each post now shows a list of everyone that liked or reposted that post below it. Here's an example.

Also, as mentioned in the "quick update" post, the public feeds and blogs now support keyboard controls similar to Gmail that let you quickly jump from post to post -- hit the letters "j" and "k" to jump to the next and previous post (the left and right arrow keys will do the same thing). Thanks to @ikari for providing the initial implementation of this.

Quick Update: Image posting fixed

There was a bug in the image uploader that is now fixed.

Tip of the day: You can use "j" and "k" keys (or the left and right arrow keys) to scroll through posts without using your mouse (desktop only).

Notifications for comments, reblogs, follows

The bell icon in the navigation bar will take you to the new notification page that lets you see the latest activity for your site. Notifications are shown for new followers and comments, likes, and reblogs on your posts. The bell will light up red when there are new notifications. Visiting the page will mark all your notifications as read.

You can now also add profile pictures or avatars for your site -- go to the Settings page to upload a profile pic to better represent you.

Update: Added an "Edit post" button near the bottom of each post on your own site that lets you quickly jump to the edit post screen for that post.

Share, flag posts. Public / Unlisted blogs

We have a few more things for you today:

  • Share post - You've found something hilarious and you want to share it with someone -- click the little right-facing arrow icon below a post to share a post via email, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Reddit, or Whatsapp (if there's a popular service we're missing, let us know)
  • Flag / Report post - The flag icon below a post now lets you report a post for spam/illegal content or to tag NSFW posts that are appearing in the non-nsfw public feed. Reports are manually reviewed at this time.
  • Unlisted blogs - All blogs are public but now you have the option to mark  your site as "Unlisted" via the Settings page to prevent it from appearing in public feeds like /everyone and /random (it will still appear in a user's /friends feed if they are following you though).
  • Reset password page - We all forget things -- this helps you recover your account if you forget your password (make sure you have a valid email on file though).

Update #2: Snuck in Profile picture uploading on Settings page. Will make a formal announcement with next update. Also /random feed is now way faster

Update: 2 fixes:

  1. A bug caused reposts to not work for a few hours. This is now fixed. Read More »

Site Stats, Color, and more

We have a bunch of updates for you today:

  • Background color setting for your blog -- you can see it in action here on this news page. Goto the Settings page and click the "Site Background color" setting to pick a background color for your blog. This is just the start of the customization/theming options coming soon but we figured this is a good place to start.
  • Site subtitle - You probably want to write a little more at the top of your page -- this is now in the settings page and allows upto 200 characters. You can also use bold, italic and link tags in it (<b>, <i>, and <a> respectively)
  • Site stats - you can see some stats about your blog on the Posts page -- the number of posts you've made, how many times your posts have been viewed (we started tracking views last night), and the number of likes, comments and reposts your posts have received.
  • View counts per post - we're also showing the view counts for each post near the bottom of each one on your site (and on the /everyone page.
  • Automatic NSFW tagging - Loforo allows for NSFW/adult content as Soup did but we allow you to filter it out on the public feeds. To help identify nsfw content, we now have an automatic, AI-driven NSFW tagger for posts. It's not perfect and will misclassify some content as nsfw or vice-versa. We will have a manual NSFW tagging option per post as well as a "Report" button for public feeds to report adult content that isn't tagged as such. Read More »

Smarter /everyone feed

We've rewritten the /everyone page to be a little smarter with the following changes:

  • No longer showing multiple posts from the same user back-to-back (it may happen on page change when endless-scrolling though)
  • The same user will appear upto 2 times per page
  • Duplicate posts/reposts are detected per-page and the oldest repost is used
  • We store the last viewed post between pages so if there are a lot of posts being posted, you won't see the last few posts from the previous page pushed onto the next page

A new Account settings page has also been added so you can now change your email address and password. A minor fix: the login form no longer clears your email if you get your password wrong.

Friend and Follower lists

All blogs now have a follower and following list (and a total post count). Here's a sample.

There's not much more to say, you all asked for it so it's here..

Update 2020/07/24: A handful of fixes and tweaks have been rolled out tonight:

  • Friends feed fixed -- now it won't load non-friend posts once you goto page 2
  • "Reposted from" tag would only show once per reblogged site, now shows all "Reposted from" messages correctly
  • You don't need to login again if you close your browser -- logins will persist upto 30 days from login (or till you manually log out)

One-click Reposts

Many have asked for a single-click repost / reblog so it's now here. Hit the "Repost" button to reblog a post to your own site. No more popups and its super fast!

We're also now correctly tracking the repost sources so we will be able to display that under each post without writing duplicate "Reposted from" messages (displaying the Reposted tag will be completed later today Done).

We've also implemented the top navigation bar across both the /everyone and the blog pages if you are logged in as well as added a "My site" link to get to your own site quickly.

Update: There is now a "Reposted from <site> via <site>" that links to the last reposted person as well as the original poster. The links in the repost message also link directly to the reposted post instead of just the site's main page. There is also a repost count displayed if a post has been reposted.

Follow Friends! (or ignore them)

Friends are here -- follow people or block them with a single click!

On all blogs and in each post in the /everyone feed, you'll see 2 buttons in the upper-right when logged in:

  • Follow them so you can see their posts in an upcoming friends-only feed
  • Block them to stop their posts from showing up in /everyone and /random

Who likes Likes (and Reblogs)?

We love likes. So we've now added like/love/thumbs-up/upvote functionality across every post (and on the /everyone page).

Both logged-in users and visitors can like posts -- in the future, we'll add the ability to see which users liked each post.

Update: We've also added a /random -- its like /everyone except random.

Update #2: Reblogs / Repost! Yes, its already here! Just click the loopy icon below any post to reblog / repost it to your own site! We'll release an update to this in the near future that will allow you to see who and how many people reblogged your posts too.

Bunch of Loforo Updates!

We've added a few features to make the Soup people feel more at home.

  • /everyone - A new "/everyone" page has been added that shows the most recent things posted to any blog here on Loforo
  • New Post buttons - To make it easier to post images, quotes and links, we've now added dedicated buttons right below the "Create Post" page -- just 1-click to add any of those formatted nicely into your post
  • Improved styling on the blog pages. We've tweaked the default style on user-blogs and assigned default header images. You can change the header photos from the Settings page

We have lots more stuff in the works including more customization/theme options for your site (including full control over the CSS), post "likes", commenting ("reactions"), and reblog / repost.

There's a lot more in the works but if theres something we're missing, let us know!
